By Secretary Daniel Jordan
October 18, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Past Captain of Engine Co. 3, Dave Harvey.

Dave joined our department on January 3rd, 1968, and served as both an active firefighter and life member for 56 years. His dedication to the community of Saint James and his service as a firefighter for the FDNY is a legacy that will never be forgotten. Dave, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, served our country during the Korean War.

As Captain of FDNY Ladder Company 169, Dave displayed the courage and strength that defined his career, notably surviving a roof collapse during the historic Waldbaums fire in 1978. His bravery and commitment to public safety were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Dave was known for his tireless work ethic. His attention to detail reflected the pride he took in his role as a mentor, and the respect he had for his fellow firefighters.

Details regarding services will be shared in the coming days. Please keep the Harvey family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Thank you to the St. James Fire Department for the love and support shown to our family during this most difficult time. My dad LOVED being a firefighter. He loved the job, and the home he found among his fellow firefighters... and he loved St. James. We miss him terribly, but cherish the memories we still get to hold close.

A warm thank you to the St. James Fire Department for showing up and honoring my dad in the way you did. It was so special to see the fire trucks my dad had once driven and worked on. Thank you for providing the delicious lunch and giving us a space to be together as a family in a space we frankly grew up in. It was special for us. Both our Mom and Dad's names were on plaques there and we got to share that with our children and grandchildren. My Dad LOVED being a fireman, he loved his time with the department. Thanks again for everything.

A warm thank you for all you did for our family with the passing of our dad. It was so nice to see the fireman pay their respects and see the engines that dad once drove and worked on. Thank you for the delicious lunch and space to be with family in a place we frankly grew up in. We got to see the Plaques with both our Mom and Dads names and got to share that with our children and grandchildren. It was special and we really appreciate it.
